The number of guesses to reach the answer is directly correlated with the level of difficulty of the puzzle. This is the case irrespective of the fact of whether the game is played with or without the help of the hints. Now that you have solved the puzzle, let’s dive into what made today’s Wordle challenging and how players performed on average.
Difficulty Level
Wordle’s difficulty means how challenging the game is. The difficulty level varies daily. It is measured by the New York Times (NYT) on a scale of 1 to 6, where 1 is the easiest and 6 being the most difficult on this scale. This scale is not a coincidence because the maximum allowed number of guesses in the game is 6. The difficulty of each puzzle is determined by averaging the number of guesses to reach the answer provided by a small panel of testers who are paid to solve each puzzle in advance to help NYT identify any issues and inconsistencies in the puzzle.
The average difficulty of NYT’s Wordle today is moderately challenging (4.8 guesses out of 6) as compared to the historical puzzles. It is according to the NYT WordleBot which is a tool provided by The New York Times that analyses your Wordle performance and suggests optimal guesses. So, the average player took a little less than five moves to solve today’s puzzle. It reflects how well the word was understood.

Wordle Tips & Best Practices
Everyday hints for Wordle are important to solve the respective day’s game. These are the methods to improve guessing in Wordle. But, it is beneficial to learn a few strategies and know some tricks which will improve your Wordle solving skills, and you will naturally get better at the game. The recommendation is to choose a good start (seed) word and a similar or altogether different second word. It is explained below.
Choose the Best Start Word
Best Wordle starting words have a balanced combination of vowels and consonants as well as their positions. Best tip is to choose from the recommended starting (seed) words. This will help you solve Wordle without possibly breaking your daily streak. A great starting word helps you guess the correct answer in fewer attempts, even if you are a puzzle-solving expert. Fewer/reduced attempts mean your score is high, because the score is inversely proportional to the number of attempts to solve the puzzle. For example, you can reduce your attempts from 4 to 3 (reducing attempts from four to three) and 5 to 4 (reducing attempts from five to four) etc. It is because starting with the best words have the character inclusion and variation, which covers most of the Oxford’s 5-letter dictionary words used by Wordle. The best start words are either chosen based on the statistical prominence of the successful word or the personal preferences of the player. These words often consist of the most common and frequent letters for English words. Words with these frequent occurring consonants along with vowel rich words are better candidates for the best starting words for Wordle.
What are the Best Start Words?
Various sources suggest different starting words. The best start words are presented as the following:
- CRANE
- TALES
- ROATE
- STARE
- SALET
➕ Choose a Unique Second Word
It is unlikely that you will get the correct answer on the first guess. The second word you choose will obviously depend on what your first word was, as you won’t want to repeat any letters you’ve already used. Use the information collected from the yellow tiles and choose a unique second word to enter for the second guess that contains entirely different letters. It will help you find success in Wordle.
There are two recommended ways to choose the second word:
Choose a completely different letter for the second guess to maximise the information about the “not present” letters. Use the second word as PHONY, if you have chosen the starting word from the list of best start words above. It is a statistically better option as a second word, because “Y” is one of the most frequent fifth letters.
Alternatively, choose a vowel-rich word which is not from the above list of the best starter words. It means that this word will be like the starting word but with elimination in mind. Eliminate the letters with the knowledge gained from the grey tiles from the first guess.
Use the process of elimination
Part of the Wordle game is about the process of elimination. We have to eliminate the words which are not a possible answer, and maximise the knowledge of possible letters and their respective positions.
Enter a guess that eliminates all but 1 possible solution. The puzzle can be solved in 2 guesses this way. There is a special case of the elimination strategy. Sometimes one of the possible solutions itself works as an elimination word.
Avoid Unlikely Answers ❌
Some words are excluded from the list of possible solutions in addition to the answer being from the dictionary words. Because Wordle has a dedicated editor, Tracy Bennett, assigned in November 2022 by the NYTimes. She manually removed a set of too obscure or vulgar words from the possible answers to cater to wider users. Therefore, you should exclude such kinds of words from your guesses.
About Wordle
Wordle is a simple browser-based word game where your challenge is to guess a five-letter word in six (maximum of 6) attempts. All guesses have to be from actual English words. Coloured tiles are used for the feedback after each wrong attempted guess. The correctly positioned letter is shown in the green colour and the incorrect letter (which was not supposed to be in the particular position) is shown in a yellow colour. The tile turns grey if none of the letters are in today’s answer.
Origin 📜
Josh Wardle, a software engineer is the creator of Wordle. He made the game available to the public in October of 2021. The game was acquired in early February 2022 for a seven-figure sum by the New York Times Games (NYT Games) in 2022.
The simplicity of Wordle made it a successful part of the daily lives of millions of users. Its popularity was also influenced positively due to the pandemic COVID-19. It all started with only 90 users and now 2 million users play it weekly. Google search even created an Easter egg for this puzzle. When one searches for “Wordle”, the site’s logo becomes an animated game of Wordle to find the word “Google”.
How to Play Wordle ✅
Play Wordle in the following simple steps:
Each Wordle begins with six horizontal rows containing five blank boxes. Think of a five-letter word, and Wordle will tell you if any of the letters are in the word of the day. A green box indicates that you guessed the right character in the correct place. A yellow box indicates that the letter appears in a different spot, and a greyscale box means that a letter doesn’t appear in today’s answer at all. Letters are sometimes repeated within the same word, for example, as in hippo (p), or chock (c).
Where to play
Wordle is played via the NYT Games website and it is entirely free. Follow the steps to play the game:
- Visit the NYTimes Games to start Wordle.
- Register or login to your existing NYT Games account. An account is recommended to save your progress and streak.
- Type in your guess and press enter to submit the guess.
